Shared hosting vs VPS: which one does your business need?

Choose shared hosting for brochure sites, private shared hosting when your site is busy enough that slow afternoons cost you enquiries, and a VPS when you run software rather than pages. The deciding factor is guaranteed resources, not disk space.
How the three models differ
On shared hosting, many accounts sit on one server and draw from a common pool of processor time and memory. It is efficient and cheap, and it is completely adequate until a neighbour has a busy day.
Private shared hosting reserves a slice of that machine for you: 2 CPU cores and 3 GB of RAM that nobody else can consume. You also get SSH access and no cap on site transfer.
A virtual private server goes further, giving you an isolated environment with 3 guaranteed cores and 4 GB of RAM. You control the stack, which matters when you are running an application rather than serving pages.
Signals it is time to upgrade

- Your host emails you about resource limits
- You have added a store, a booking system or a members area
- Server response time in PageSpeed Insights is over 600 ms
- You need SSH, cron jobs or a specific PHP extension
- Your database has grown past a few hundred megabytes
What upgrading does not fix
A bigger server will not rescue a badly built site. If your homepage ships four megabytes of uncompressed images, moving to a VPS makes those images arrive slightly faster and nothing else. Fix page weight, caching and image formats first; they are free. Then upgrade if the numbers still justify it.
